Medaillon of the Saint-Louis Gallery

The Saint-Louis Gallery, built at the end of the XIVth century, allowed access from the king's residence to the Bonbec Tower and the Hall on the Water, both built for the king Saint Louis, whom the gallery is named after.The decoration evokes its origin, and includes, as well as the statue of Saint Louis, a medallion (photo opposite) on which scales, the hand of Justice and the sword are engraved intertwined, topped with oak and olive leaves.

First chamber

First chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeal inaugurated in 1892. In the place of the Christ painted by Henner which was removed in application of the law separating Church and State, a tapestry is displayed representing .a queen of France (possibly Blanche of Castile) originally from the Tuileries chateau

The Saint-Louis Gallery

To decorate the Saint-Louis Gallery, this work by Charles Lameire evokes royal sovereign justice. Two angels carry a medallion on which scales are engraved. The hand of Justice and the sword are intertwined and topped with oak and olive leaves.

Door of the Saint-Louis Gallery giving onto the criminal division chamber. It is topped with a royal crown inserted in a medallion, the work of Charles Lameire evoking royal sovereign justice.

Back part of the first chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeal. We can see the portrait of the District Attorney Merlin of Douai through the half-open door to the atrium.

Atrium of the first chamber

Atrium of the first chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Pediment with a bronze bust of the emperor Justinian surrounded by Law and Justice. Above, two eagles evoke the fact that the Emperor Justinian reign over both the Western and the Eastern empires for approximately fifty years.

The library

The library of the Supreme Court of Appeal escaped the fire of 1871. It is constituted of works that mostly come from the former courts of the Palace. Many works are currently being restored.
